This original fizz uses the structure of a gin highball and gives it blood orange color with a fresh basil-shiso lift.
Story
Theo wants this one served tall, cold, and glowing. Blood orange brings the color, shiso makes the finish pop, and the bubbles keep it moving. Build it right in the glass and get back to the conversation.

Ingredients
- 1 1/2 ounces gin
- 2 ounces fresh blood orange juice
- 1/2 ounce fresh lime juice
- 1/2 ounce basil-shiso syrup
- 3 ounces chilled sparkling water
- Ice
- 1 basil leaf
- 1 shiso leaf
Instructions
- Add the basil and shiso syrup to a tall glass and press the leaves gently with a bar spoon to release their aroma.
- Fill the glass completely with ice so the drink chills quickly and stays balanced.
- Pour in the gin, blood orange juice, and lime juice.
- Stir slowly for 8 seconds to combine the citrus and gin without melting too much ice.
- Top with the chilled sparkling water, pouring down the side of the glass to preserve the bubbles.
- Lift the drink once from the bottom with a bar spoon, garnish with the remaining herb leaves, and serve immediately.
Chef Tips
- Use sparkling water that is very cold for the liveliest finish.
- Make the syrup by simmering equal parts sugar and water with basil and shiso for 3 minutes, then cool and strain.
- Roll the blood oranges before juicing to get more juice.
- Vodka works if you want the herbs and citrus to lead.
Cook's Notes
- **Herbs:** Press gently so the leaves release aroma without turning bitter.
- **Ice:** Fill the glass to the top for a colder, slower-melting drink.
- **Soda:** Add it last and stir only once.
